I’ve been playing No Man’s Sky (NMS), and only that, for far too long. Yet I’ve had problems persuading myself to try something else. I’ve got the games, I’ve bought the games, but getting myself to run them …?

It’s an addiction. I don’t get so much pleasure out of it anymore, but it has some itches I have to scratch—new expeditions, weekly small new challenges, irregular (free) updates. I see why it’s a grand project for the game’s designers, but it’s become a grand lock for me. I must break out of its house.

Fortunately, NMS has recently helped me. The last two updates, dog baiting and yet another invader, have failed to excite me—I’m a builder, not a destroyer, bubble wrap excepted. They finally got me to pull my thumb out and try something else.

I’ve managed to force myself in front of an old PC running Steam, and hit play. I decided to start simple, looking for short harmless games, preferably full of narrative goodness. I found Alba, not a bad start, and which would be great had I a child or grandchild of around 8 years or so to entertain. There’s also Aurora Hills with puzzles that require one to think, although I’m not in the mood to think today. Still, it’s a start. I’ve got a couple of biggie games to play when I feel able to commit to them.
